i’m still not a triathlete technically. due to to a nor’easter over the weekend, the swim was cancelled so they went with a duathlon format adding a 1.5 mile run to the front end. the good news was i reached my goal and finished the race without walking or stopping. my overall time was 1:54:44 with no penalties, for 307th place. here are my splits:

RUN1: 16:40 / pace: 11:07
T1: 1:07 / rank: 297
BIKE: 55:39 / rate: 16.2
T2: 0:52 / rank: 311
RUN2: 40:28 /pace 13:03
TOTAL TIME: 1:54:44

the first place finisher did it in 1:02:54. there were 327 places, and there were around 450 finishers. my second goal was to not come in last or make any penalties, so i am pretty happy overall with how it went. full results are here.

up next is the veteran’s day 10K here in washington on november 12. since this one is sponsored by a masonic lodge, i am particularly excited about it. gabriella will be running it too.

off road triathlon

just learned about the charlottesville off-road triathlon, which was held this year on august 20th. .75 mile swim / 11.5 mile mountain bike / 4 mile trail run. off-road is more my speed, so this may be my focus for next year’s season.

meanwhile, my training for the henlopen tri is going pretty well. my times are going to be slow, but i am pretty sure that i will survive it at this point. just about a month to go.

the timid triathlete

ok, so my wife has been hounding me all summer to do this, so i’m doing it.

i joined the dc triathletes club and i’m now officially registered to race in the cape henlopen triathlon. the race is a “sprint”, meaning it is short: 500 meter swim – 15 mile bike – 3.1 mile run. most seasoned triathletes will finish this paltry distance in mere moments. my hope is to merely endure. since my role in athletics is pretty much one of out-and-out slapstick, this should be fairly entertaining. stay tuned. tight pants and other spandex is sure to follow as i don the superhero-esque garb of this sport of middle-aged titans… some how, i am suddenly recalling a certain scene from the incredibles.
